During the last six months I have been living in North Central Florida at a Christian Retirement Community. I wholeheartedly became an active member of the 50-voice choir at The Village Church. We started preparing for the Christmas cantata in September since our director requires everyone to memorize the music. We had three final dress rehearsals for our 80-minute program which has always been well attended by the surrounding towns, to the three performances.
We were ready and excited to present the story of Christ’s coming to us; with music and drama. Saturday night, the auditorium was filled with people, some who had traveled an hour to be there.
The handbell choir played the beginning of their fourth and last song before the choir was to come in. THE LIGHTS WENT OUT! A thunder and lightning storm had hit, and we later learned that a tree had fallen on a transformer, and the entire 1200-acre Village was DARK! It took 45-minutes to get everyone out safely in the dark and rain to their cars. As disappointed as we all were, the next two performances were great.
Though there was darkness without warning that night, it was repairable. But there is darkness all around us all the time. I’m not talking about the darkness causes by a transformer that has been downed by a falling tree. I’m talking about the darkness of sin and evil.
But there are no levels of sin in God’s eyes….sin is sin. One type of sin is not greater than another, even though we put them in categories. The only one ever born without sin is God’s Son, Jesus Christ. He is THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.
When the Apostle Paul wrote the Letter to the Ephesians, he was reminding them not to be caught up in the wealth of the area. Ephesus was a commercial center because it was at an intersection of major trade routes. Many people groups came through with their wares and also brought their pagan gods and philosophies. The church in Ephesus was in danger of being persuaded by the wealth and false gods of these travelers. So Paul wrote the following to encourage them to LIVE AS CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT.
Ephesians 5:8-14 “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible.”
Stay in THE LIGHT…..it’s more fun than groping in the dark!!!
