NEED JESUS IN YOUR BOAT?

Maybe you’ve heard the old idiom “I’m up a creek without a paddle!” exclaimed by someone who is in an awkward position with no way out. Or maybe you have even said “that doesn’t float my boat.”  Around here, at the retirement community, we often say to one another after hearing a familiar scenario, “we’re all in the same boat!!!”

Well…….Jesus’ disciples had such a situation in a fishing boat on the Sea of Galilee (which is actually an inland lake……but storms can come up quickly from the coast through a break in the mountains named The Horns of Hattin).

Mark 4:35-41 NIV  “That day (after teaching a throng of people by the lake) Jesus said to His disciples ‘Let us go over to the other side.’  Leaving the crowd behind, they took Him along, just as He was, in the boat.  There were also other boats with Him.  A furious squall came up and the waves broke over the boat so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion, The disciples woke Him and said to Him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’  He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still !’  Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.  He said to His disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid?  Do you still have no faith?’  They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this?  Even the wind and the waves obey Him!’ “

Are you troubled today with the storms of life?  Do you feel as though your boat is swamped and you’re sinking with no help in sight?

Believe me…..you are not alone.  JESUS IS IN YOUR BOAT!!!

Jesus speaks PEACE to those storms.  Ask Him…….trust Him.

Just Keep Swimming

I think most of us have seen the movie “Finding Nemo” when the character Dori sings “just keep swimming, just keep swimming.” In the movie “Finding Dori” we learn why she sings that song. She is a small young fish and sings the song with her parents when she is learning how to swim and she continues to sing the song when she is facing her fears.

We all have fears that we must face. Whether we are a small fish, a child, or an adult, we all have fears. “If you don’t look at fear as your enemy it will one day defeat you” (Havilah Cunningham). You are either driven by fear, or overtaken by fear. What will it be for you? If you let fear defeat you, you will not grow or become the person God made you to be. You can either step forward into growth or step back into safety. What will it be for you?

There is a spirit of fear that wants to dominate everything in you. It is Satan’s way of stopping you from doing the powerful things God created you to do. Will you let him stop you? Will you let him win? What happens when you face fear? What if? What would you become? You will not know unless you do it, unless you take action. It will not be easy. Facing what you are afraid of is NOT easy, but you will never know who you could be or what life has for you if you don’t.

I was asked why I go on so many trips, and do so many activities and adventures. And my answer is this, there is so much on this earth to experience and so many places to go, why not try to do as much as possible?! I said yes to an 11 month Christian mission trip to 11 different countries. I was scared. I was afraid. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I did it anyway and I am here to tell you I do not regret going one bit! I am so happy I was obedient to God. I grew in ways I would have never if I didn’t step out of my comfort zone and face my fears.

Our job is to be obedient and say yes to the opportunity in front of us even if it scares us. There is anointing that comes when you obey God. And when we obey the supernatural will happen. And I experienced just that. God gave me an anointing over my life and I experienced miracles, and went on many adventures.

I have run and finished a half marathon, completed a triathlon, hiked Half Dome in Yosemite, training now to hike Mount Whitney (the tallest peak in the continental America), went shark cage diving, laid with tigers, rode an elephant, went on a safari. I’m not saying this to brag of all the things I’ve done. This is a result of saying yes to an opportunity, facing fears and going for it. I accepted the challenge of training, of leaving the country for a year and in return I was able to do all this and more!

Are you going to “just keep swimming” or are you going to let fear defeat you? It’s up to you.

The Walking Wounded

I can’t remember another time in my life when so many people around me are living in a constant state of pain. It’s debilitating. Yes, we can say it’s a choice to react to adversity by accepting the pain. And yes, we can choose joy… but we are human and we are tender and we are WOUNDED.

Our loved ones are in trouble, and we ache for their freedom.

Flags are flying perpetually at half staff these days, in response to the horror of the rash of terrorist attacks on innocent people. We cringe at the news of a new attack almost daily, and we mourn with those who’ve lost loved ones. The air is electric with emotion right now, and it is spilling over into our everyday lives.

The news shows images of death daily. Even if it’s not directly affecting us or someone dear, we still absorb the intensity of a world in mourning. So many in the mainstream population of the world right now are walking through their days in a state of uncertainty. They are traumatized, they are burdened, and they are afraid. A perpetual state of being the walking wounded.

There are days I feel like we are all living in a surreal movie setting. It’s as if reality has been suspended and this horrible new sequence of events has ushered in a new era of fear.

I’ve heard about the last days my whole life. Read depictions of it in books like the Left Behind series, marveled at how movies about the future were always so dark and depressing. And now, here we are in a moment of reality that rivals those fictional depictions. Today, I actually had the thought that I’m fearful of the future my grandson will be facing.

Should I be surprised? I’m not a theologian, and am certainly not here to discuss the biblical evidence of what to look for. That’s what we have Strong’s Concordance and Google for. But it goes without saying that there are some signs we can’t avoid.

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

2 Timothy 3:1-5

Yes, all those who are brutal and abusive have left in their wake a people who are shell-shocked and hurting, and need to know that Jesus was wounded even as they are wounded. He sent the Holy Spirit to comfort us in our pain, and bring us hope.

Remembering the promises in Psalms made me lift up my face to the heavens and thank God for today. In spite of everything going on, we do have hope. And perhaps those of us who are able to carry more hope than others are tasked with the job of lifting up those who are still the walking wounded.

For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.  Psalm 37:9

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.

Psalm 62:5

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 42:11

but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

Warrior

I am a warrior. I am fighting. I am fighting in a battle. The enemy is fierce. He is a stealer, killer, and destroyer. He is darkness. He is evil. He is negative. He tells lies. He wants me to loose, to give up. He tries to tear down my family. He tries put curses and chains on them, on me. He wants to rip us a part. He wants us to be alone. He wants us to think we are the only ones in this dark world. He wants us to have diseases and illness. He is trying to destroy us.

BUT

I am a warrior. I am fighting. I am fighting in a battle and GOD is on my side. He is the bringer of life. He is all-powerful. He is mighty. He is light. He is joy. He is good. He is faithful. He tells us truth. He gives us hope. He builds us up. He restores us. He is the healer. He is our rock and foundation. He sets us free.

We have nothing to fear with GOD on our side.

“For nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:37

I know the evil one wants us to be afraid, but knowing that the all powerful GOD is on my side keeps me at ease.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. “ 2 Timothy 1:7
“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deut 20:4

The Message version of Deut 20:4 says this,
“When you go to war against your enemy and see horses and chariots and soldiers far outnumbering you, do not recoil in fear of them; God, your God, who brought you up out of Egypt is with you. When the battle is about to begin, let the priest come forward and speak to the troops. He’ll say, “Attention, Israel. In a few minutes you’re going to do battle with your enemies. Don’t waver in resolve. Don’t fear. Don’t hesitate. Don’t panic. God, your God, is right there with you, fighting with you against your enemies, fighting to win.”

God is fighting with us and for us! We are not alone in this battle. I am fighting but I am not fighting by myself. I have God with me, and I also have fellow believers fighting with me. We are more powerful than evil because God’s great power is inside of us.

The victory is ours because of GOD!

Don’t lose hope. Don’t fear. GOD IS WITH YOU!

You are a warrior.

The lyrics of this song remind me of how the victory has been won. Jesus died on the cross and conquered death of the evil one and rose to life in victory!

“For the Cross”

Bethel Music
The life You gave
Your body was broken
Your love poured out
You bled and You died for me
There on that cross
You breathed Your last as you were crucified
You gave it all for me

Hallelujah, what a Savior
Hallelujah, what a friend
Hallelujah, King forever
We thank You for the cross

There in the ground
Sealed in the darkness
Lifeless laid
The frame of the Father’s son
In agony
He watched His only Son be sacrificed
He gave it all for me

But on that day
What seemed as the darkest hour
A violent hope
Broke through and shook the ground
And as You rose
The Light of all the world was magnified
And You rose in victory

Hallelujah, it is finished
Hallelujah, it is done
Hallelujah King forever
We thank you for the cross

And though our sins are scarlet
You have made us white as snow

BOOOOOO!!!!

Are you scared?

This is supposed to be the scariest time of the year. I have often wondered why we like to be frightened. Much money is spent on costumes and parties to see who can come up with the most horrific look to scare anyone they encounter.

Let’s stop fooling ourselves into thinking October 31st is all fun and games. There really is evil and horror in the world and it’s getting worse. Oh, I know, there have been periods of time in world history when evil was rampant. Maybe it’s because we have access to world news in a moment, but for us now in a “civilized” world it is scary!!!

The purpose of this LifeWordsToday blog is to offer reminders that we are in this world together, and we endeavor to encourage you to not give up or give in to the world’s ways.

Be aware that there indeed is a devil who fell from God’s heaven with thousands of angels who chose to follow him. They are the demons who obey his commands and are sent to stir up trouble on this earth.

Luke 12:4 & 5 (Jesus’ words)
“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear. Fear him who after killing the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.”

Enough said about him…….

We follow God who has a good plan for each one of us. His love is so awesome and everlasting that He sent His Son Jesus to live among us. Jesus shed His blood and died for the covering of our sins….then arose from the dead. If we acknowledge Him as our personal Savior and follow Him, He will take us to the place He is preparing for those who love Him. What a hope we have in Christ!!!!

While we live in this crazy, mixed-up world, Jesus offers freedom from fear.

Jesus says “Fear not I am with you, even to the end of the age.”

I John 4:1 – 4 “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

After the John 3:16 passage we are all familiar with where Jesus is talking to Nicodemus about believing in Him…..Jesus then says……” This is the verdict; Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

S0000….go out, have fun, carve your pumpkins, eat candy…..but CARRY THE LIGHT!!!

The Broken Window

Have you ever noticed that our anticipation of an event is often greater than its fulfillment? I think my six-year-old son found that out today!

Summer and baseballs just naturally go together; and so, I guess do broken windows! Ronnie broke his first one today while striving for a big-league pitching curve, which went astray. He looked at the broken pieces of glass – at the large hole in the window – and then began to realize that he just might have to pay for this in some fashion or other; and the tears began to flow. It was fully two hours before Daddy was to be home, but he was anticipating that spanking he might get. Since it was his first offense I doubted very much that Daddy would punish him; yet felt he would be the better for having a little fear in his heart.

broken-window

He was filled with anticipation for something that had not yet happened. Childish? Yes – but aren’t we adults as foolish? Ninety percent of the things we worry about never happen! We anticipate our tomorrow and fill them with joys and sorrows which never come to pass. So often it is this way. How many times we have planned for a lovely occasion – a trip – an outing – only to find that our anticipation was actually greater than the event itself.

But as I ironed the mountain of clothing that had been washed, I thought, “God does not deal with us in this fashion.” He has told us to let our hearts not be troubled and to let our minds dwell on the fact that in our Father’s house are many mansions. The Word tells us that, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Cor. 2:9)

Ah – here is one event I can dwell upon with the keenest anticipation, and even in my wildest dreams I can never accurately picture heaven – its joys – its beauties – its fulfillments – nor the riches that are mine in Christ Jesus. In fact, its glories are so great that God is going to have to give me a transformed mind and body that I might enjoy them! Throughout eternity I will dwell on the riches of His love. And perhaps – just perhaps – I will give a thought to the puniness of my anticipation in the light of this revelation of Glory!
