Be An OVERCOMER…….

Of what?

Of my bad habits? Of unhealthy relationships? Of financial chaos? Of a debilitating illness? Of sin in my life?

We say we want to be an “overcomer,” but we don’t want to experience anything so difficult that we have to overcome!!!

Easy to say…hard to do.

What does it mean to overcome anything? I can overcome my poor eating habits for a day or two…then it’s back to the Lay’s potato chip bag! My hand just goes into the bag without thinking? Is that the key? Think about the consequences; too much salt and oil!

Webster’s dictionary says….overcome: to get the better of; surmount difficulties; overpower; overwhelm; to gain the superiority; win.

I like that….win! But it’s not just winning a game or competition. IT’S A LIFE OR DEATH THING.

Jesus says “….in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

So, if we are believers in Christ and are becoming more like Him as we study His word so that we know Him, then we can overcome the world’s influence on us.

And, at the end of days WE WIN!

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” I John 4:4&5

And, the ultimate goal is….”He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.” Revelation 3:5

“He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and l will be his God and he shall be My son.” Revelation 21:7

As Your Day, So Shall Your Strength Be

Some days are easier than others.

Some days you feel great, the sun is shining, everyone seems to smile at you, you get paid, no bills come in the mail, you get your workout in, make a delicious dinner, and everyone does their “homework” and gets to bed. Nothing major happens.

Some days a huge, unexpected wrench is thrown into the mix, and your life story takes a turn. This happens to all of us – it is to be human. We receive a bit of bad news, or we have to deliver difficult news to another. Our schedule gets thrown off, we may exist in a state of shock for a day, or more, depending on the severity.

Some days come with an event or moment that has been planned and anticipated. There may be a huge buildup, and much preparation, sweat and tears put in to that day. These days are planned, but any number of variables may occur once the time comes. This still causes stress and requires poise and strength.

Such is life. We bring some of our “storms” upon ourselves…. and others just come because we live in an imperfect world.

Fortunately for us, God promises, even with the self-imposed circumstances, that He will never leave nor forsake us. Whether we are suffering through the consequences of our own actions, the natural valleys of life, or difficulties other people have imposed upon us, GOD WILL NEVER FAIL US.

Part of His promise is that we will have the strength we need for whatever we must face.

“May your bolts be made of iron and bronze, and may your strength be sufficient for each day you live.” (ISV)

“On the day I called, You answered me; You made me bold with strength in my soul.” (NASB)

My dear Grandmother was born on January 15, 1919 and Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 just ten years later. These are two of the people I have most admired, and their words of wisdom have always topped my list of words to live by. We all just celebrated Mr. King’s life and contribution to our world this week. Imagine the days he faced, and the strength he needed to be so courageous and change the world. God gave him the strength he needed for each day. What an example of power and light even amidst great struggle.

I’ll conclude with a few words from a sermon titled “Weariness” that my Grandmother Gladys Johnson preached in the late 1980s:

“As your day, so shall your strength be. You may find peace in the Lord even amidst the bad day. He only gives us what we can bear. We can have joyful days regardless of circumstance. Use the Lord’s instruction and resources to have peace, strength and victory.”

Me with my Grandma on her 90th

Me with my Grandma on her 90th

Amen. And so, as you face what each day brings, may you always turn to Him, hold your head high, and draw on the strength that He gives to conquer what comes your way.

Problems… We’ve all got ’em

I want to share this devotion from Jesus Calling with you. This really resonated with me because of the season I am in and I feel it will resonate with some of you as well.

“Approach problems with a light touch. When your mind moves toward a problem area, you tend to focus on that situation so intensely that you lose sight of Me. You pit yourself against the difficulty as if you had to conquer it immediately. Your mind gears up for battle, and your body becomes tense and anxious. Unless you achieve total victory, you feel defeated.

“There is a better way. When a problem starts to overshadow your thoughts, bring this matter to Me. Talk with Me about it and look at it in the Light of My Presence. This puts some much-needed space between you and your concern, enabling you to see from My perspective. You will be surprised at the results. Sometimes you may even laugh at yourself for being so serious about something so insignificant.

“You will always face trouble in this life. But more importantly you will always have Me with you, helping you to handle whatever you encounter. Approach problems with a light touch by viewing them in My revealing Light.”

“Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O Lord.” Psalm 89:15

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD.” John 16:33

Spend time with Jesus. Bask in his presence and allow him to take your burdens and your problems. They are not yours yo carry.

God knows…

I received this word from God and I feel I need to share it with you!

“The waiting is where you are and need to be, but it won’t be long. You will not stay in the waiting! I have overcome any obstacle you face and I am by your side when you face them to walk hand in hand through them. I am in front, behind, and beside you. Everywhere you look I am there. There isn’t a place you can go that I cannot see you. I am watching over you my sweet child. And I am protecting you from the devil’s schemes to bring you down and take your hope. Keep your eyes focused on me, and the ways of the world and the devil will not be a distraction to you. Don’t let him grab a hold of you. Keep your eyes on me, seek my face and let me fill in the gaps and there will not be room for anything else!

“Trust me with your whole heart and give me your cares and your worries. I don’t want you to carry them with you. I love you!”

Love, God

“O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with my ways.

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

Psalm 139:1-3, 7-9
