Be An OVERCOMER…….

Of what?

Of my bad habits? Of unhealthy relationships? Of financial chaos? Of a debilitating illness? Of sin in my life?

We say we want to be an “overcomer,” but we don’t want to experience anything so difficult that we have to overcome!!!

Easy to say…hard to do.

What does it mean to overcome anything? I can overcome my poor eating habits for a day or two…then it’s back to the Lay’s potato chip bag! My hand just goes into the bag without thinking? Is that the key? Think about the consequences; too much salt and oil!

Webster’s dictionary says….overcome: to get the better of; surmount difficulties; overpower; overwhelm; to gain the superiority; win.

I like that….win! But it’s not just winning a game or competition. IT’S A LIFE OR DEATH THING.

Jesus says “….in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

So, if we are believers in Christ and are becoming more like Him as we study His word so that we know Him, then we can overcome the world’s influence on us.

And, at the end of days WE WIN!

“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world – our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” I John 4:4&5

And, the ultimate goal is….”He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.” Revelation 3:5

“He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and l will be his God and he shall be My son.” Revelation 21:7

Yay….I win, and I am rich!!!

TEACH BY EXAMPLE

In thinking about this blog post today, and asking the Lord what He would want me to share with you….the word “teach” kept coming to my mind and heart. As I am the living elder of this family group it seems my thoughts often go that direction. My sister, niece and daughter easily share with you what they are learning from the Lord in their daily walk, but I am drawn to teach in some way each time it is my turn to write. Then I realized that because of my age and life experiences that teaching by example is what I should do. There’s not a better teacher than your godly older family members and friends…..after all we have been through the “school of hard knocks”!

And then I recall the book of Titus that admonishes the “older women to train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to honor their husbands, so that no one will malign the Word of God.”  Titus 2:3-5

Those of you who are of the male gender who are reading this, you are included in this small three chapter book, a letter written by the Apostle Paul to Titus who is pastoring the Christians on the Isle of Crete. He tells Titus to teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled (hmmm, heard that somewhere before!) and sound in faith and doctrine, in love and in endurance. Then they can teach the young men to be self-controlled (wow! must be important and covers a wide range of our personal character).

So, here’s the thing….whether you are single or married, young or old, we all have struggles with living a godly life, and this journey we are on is a never-ending classroom…..no recess, no summer breaks!

If you have a godly older person in your life to encourage you, teach you, pray with and for you, then you will learn that although life is tough, there is victory in every area  And remember the Word of God will never fail you in your classroom of life. It is the best textbook that ever was and ever will be!

More from Titus 2:11-15 “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.  It teaches us to say “NO” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope — the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave  Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness, and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good.  These, then, are the things you should teach.  Encourage and rebuke with all authority,  Do not let anyone despise you.”

Warrior

I am a warrior. I am fighting. I am fighting in a battle. The enemy is fierce. He is a stealer, killer, and destroyer. He is darkness. He is evil. He is negative. He tells lies. He wants me to loose, to give up. He tries to tear down my family. He tries put curses and chains on them, on me. He wants to rip us a part. He wants us to be alone. He wants us to think we are the only ones in this dark world. He wants us to have diseases and illness. He is trying to destroy us.

BUT

I am a warrior. I am fighting. I am fighting in a battle and GOD is on my side. He is the bringer of life. He is all-powerful. He is mighty. He is light. He is joy. He is good. He is faithful. He tells us truth. He gives us hope. He builds us up. He restores us. He is the healer. He is our rock and foundation. He sets us free.

We have nothing to fear with GOD on our side.

“For nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:37

I know the evil one wants us to be afraid, but knowing that the all powerful GOD is on my side keeps me at ease.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. “ 2 Timothy 1:7
“For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deut 20:4

The Message version of Deut 20:4 says this,
“When you go to war against your enemy and see horses and chariots and soldiers far outnumbering you, do not recoil in fear of them; God, your God, who brought you up out of Egypt is with you. When the battle is about to begin, let the priest come forward and speak to the troops. He’ll say, “Attention, Israel. In a few minutes you’re going to do battle with your enemies. Don’t waver in resolve. Don’t fear. Don’t hesitate. Don’t panic. God, your God, is right there with you, fighting with you against your enemies, fighting to win.”

God is fighting with us and for us! We are not alone in this battle. I am fighting but I am not fighting by myself. I have God with me, and I also have fellow believers fighting with me. We are more powerful than evil because God’s great power is inside of us.

The victory is ours because of GOD!

Don’t lose hope. Don’t fear. GOD IS WITH YOU!

You are a warrior.

The lyrics of this song remind me of how the victory has been won. Jesus died on the cross and conquered death of the evil one and rose to life in victory!

“For the Cross”

Bethel Music
The life You gave
Your body was broken
Your love poured out
You bled and You died for me
There on that cross
You breathed Your last as you were crucified
You gave it all for me

Hallelujah, what a Savior
Hallelujah, what a friend
Hallelujah, King forever
We thank You for the cross

There in the ground
Sealed in the darkness
Lifeless laid
The frame of the Father’s son
In agony
He watched His only Son be sacrificed
He gave it all for me

But on that day
What seemed as the darkest hour
A violent hope
Broke through and shook the ground
And as You rose
The Light of all the world was magnified
And You rose in victory

Hallelujah, it is finished
Hallelujah, it is done
Hallelujah King forever
We thank you for the cross

And though our sins are scarlet
You have made us white as snow
